5. RIDDOR - Serious Accidents And Incidents
Since the introduction and enforcement of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 (HASAW) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in 1975, deaths and serious injuries at work have dropped significantly.
However, between 130 and 150 work-related deaths still occur every year and many serious injuries and illnesses are reported. The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR) imposes duties on employers, the self-employed and people in charge of work premises
(the Responsible Person) to report certain serious workplace accidents, occupational diseases and specified dangerous occurrences (near misses).
Remember, it is a legal requirement to report accidents and incidents covered by these Regulations. Whether or not to report a near miss can be a difficult call to make.
