4. Work Experience Students

Under the law, work experience students are considered employees, and you must treat them accordingly.

Obviously, there will be liaison with the placing college or school, and their representative must make sure that the workplaces they are using are safe places to send their students.

They will want to see the risk management processes you have in place. Adhering to the processes you may have in place for employing young persons (under 18) should be sufficient, but you must also take into account any additional information supplied to you by the placing school or college.

This is of particular importance if the school/college is placing students with special needs.

Many organisations offer work experience to students from local schools and colleges and this is a very useful, and proven, method of giving young people an insight into the world of work. But obviously, if you are allowing students as young as 13 into your workplace, you must make sure they, and your workers, are safe.
