2. Main Classification of Substances Hazardous to Health
A good deal of responsibility is placed upon manufacturers and suppliers to ensure potentially dangerous substances are correctly classified and that all relevant information is made available to the ultimate user.
To identify how a substance is hazardous, there is a classification process and associated symbols which must be in place before it ever reaches the consumer. Manufactures of substances are required to ensure that: Substances are classified Safety data sheets are supplied by the manufacturer Materials are adequately packaged Child-resistant fastenings and tactile warning devices are fitted to packaging. The most common symbols covering the main classifications of hazardous substances are: Toxic Harmful/Irritant Corrosive Oxidising Flammable Gas Under Pressure Carcinogens Harmful to the Environment Explosive
