How to Dispose of Unwanted Substances If you have leftover chemicals (or any other waste, come to that) you must decide which of three categories it falls into: Always hazardous e.g. fluorescent tubes, acids May or may not be hazardous, e.g. inks, paints Never hazardous, e.g. edible oils Then refer to the safety data sheet and the associated COSHH Assessment to determine how to get rid of the substances safely.

It is likely that, if your organisation uses these substances frequently, you will already have arrangements in place for their safe disposal.

However, it is very important that such arrangements are reviewed regularly. Some hazardous waste has to be removed by licensed contractors.
