4. Driver Competency
As with vehicles, the directors/owners/board must ensure that the drivers they recruit are competent to carry out the tasks for which they have been employed. If a driver causes an accident, and it is found out that he or she was not properly qualified or competent, the directors etc will be prosecuted as well as the driver. If you have a Driver’s Policy, make sure every driver is issued with a copy and signs to say that they have read and understood it.
You must do this annually. Recruiting Drivers Recruitment is usually the responsibility of the HR department or advisor, but the Competent Person must also check that HR’s procedures are taking health and safety into account.
